Levison S. Chiwaula is a distinguished Malawian development economist, serving as a Professor of Economics at the University of Malawi and as the Research Director at the MwAPATA Institute, a local agricultural policy think-tank. A prolific researcher with over 40 peer-reviewed publications, his expertise lies in impact evaluation, applied econometrics, and the economic assessment of agricultural and health interventions. His recent 2025–2026 work includes leading randomized controlled trials on the integration of soil fertility management into input subsidy programs and analyzing policy pathways for inclusive food systems in Africa. He has served as Principal Investigator for high-impact projects funded by the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP), IDRC, and the African Development Bank, focusing on issues ranging from mobile money’s influence on rural entrepreneurial behavior to the resilience of fish value chains. A key figure in Malawian economic policy, he has served as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee for the Reserve Bank of Malawi and is the Chief Editor of the Malawi Journal of Economics. He holds a PhD in Economics from Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany, and both an MA in Economics and a BSc in Agriculture from the University of Malawi.
