Marzia Fontana

Marzia Fontana is a feminist economist with over 30 years of research and teaching experience. Her main research interests are intersecting inequalities, labour markets, international trade and unpaid work.  She has advised international organizations and bilateral agencies including the International Labour Organization, UN Women, UNCTAD, UNIDO, FAO, the European Parliament; the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), Finland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Canada's IDRC. and the UK Department for International Development (DFID). She has also been teaching and providing training on gender-aware economic analysis, both to postgraduate students and practitioners, at various universities and development institutions in the UK and other countries. She was previously a Research Fellow and MA Gender and Development Convenor at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex.

Marzia has contributed extensively to the fields of gender and international trade, and gender-aware macroeconomic modelling. She has published a number of articles and book chapters on these topics.  She is currently gender advisor for the PEP (Partnership for Economic Policy) Research Network and is on the editorial board of Feminist Economics.  She is a member of the UK Women’s Budget Group. Her fieldwork experience is mostly in Asia (Vietnam, Laos PDR, Cambodia, India) and Fiji Islands.
