Nyagosya Range

A Short resume:

Dr. Nyagosya Range is a female, Tanzanian born in April 1964. She is a chief Research Scientist and an employee of the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), based at NIMR, Muhimbili Medical Research Centre, Dar Es Salaam. She is a PhD holder in epidemiology (TB, HIV and nutrition) graduated from University of Copenhagen in 2004. She has actively been working in TB research, HIV and for over the past 20 on nutrition and TB, non-communicable disease in particular diabetes. She has enormous experience in TB, TB/HIV co-infection, TB programmatic issues, including; supportive supervision and mentorship – extensively involved in a countrywide supportive supervision and mentorship of the National TB/Leprosy Program (NTLP) activities; 1994 – 2007; facilitation and training of health workers working for TB on all aspects of TB, development of policy guidelines. She worked for TB programme at the central level Ministry of Health from 1994 – 2001; (as TB/HIV project coordinator (1994 -98) and as research coordinator (1998 -2001)). She has actively been participating in the development of NTLP strategic plans since 1997 to 2014, NTLP review since 1997 - 2020, etc.  She has supervised and mentored undergraduate, master and PhD students as well as junior staff. Dr. Range has been a Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, Co-Investigator and supervisor for several studies since 2001 to date. Currently she is a Co-PI of the DANIDA funded project entitled: “Diabetes and Associated Complications in HIV Patients” (2016-2022) and Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy of Xpert MTB/Ultra Against Culture for the Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in Tanzania – 2021-2022.

Project coordination: Dr. Range has a wide and a good experience in national coordination of projects. She was a National coordinator of TB/HIV epidemiologic study (1994-1998) at the Ministry of Health under NTLP, was a Research coordinator at the TB central unit Ministry of Health (1998-2001). National coordinator and consultant for Patient Centred TB Treatment (PCT) – (2004-2015).

Research Grants: Dr. Range has attracted several research grants from DANIDA, Global fund and International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Teaching and facilitation of trainings: Dr. Range has a good experience in organizing and conducting trainings. Organised and conducted nationally, eight training seminars involving Regional and District TB and Leprosy Coordinators and other health staff working for TB Programme, 1994 -1997; training of TB program health staff, and NIMR Technicians and Scientists on the implementation of the projects. Participated and facilitated the country-wide training of Health Workers on PCT and Fixed Dose Combinations (FDCs) -2006 -2008. Facilitated training for tutors and lecturers from health training institutions in eight zones in Tanzania in 2013 on PCT, with a focus to incorporate PCT in medical training institutions curriculum.

Consultancy:  Dr. Range has conducted both long term and short term consultancies, (from 2004 to 2018), with GTZ Tanzania, ECSA, Novartis Foundation, Management Science for Health and Global Fund.

Publications and Presentation of scientific papers:  Dr. Range has over 60 peer review publications including, papers, policy brief and book chapter. She has attended and presented scientific papers and reports in over 50 local and international conferences/meetings/workshops since 1990 to date.

Development of manual, National Guidelines and SOPs: Actively participated in the development of different manuals and guidelines for TB, HIV, TB/Diabetes, e.g. PCT manual for health workers (2005), NTLP manual, National Guideline for Tuberculosis Control at Workplace  (2013), National Guidelines for Collaborative Care and Control of Tuberculosis and Diabetes (2014).

 Review and strategic plans development for TB program: Dr. Range has actively been participated in the review of NTLP, in the development of the NTLP strategic plans and Laboratory strategic plans since 1997 to 2020. Review of publication: Dr. Range has for several years saved as reviewer for internal and local journals including Elsevier and Tanzania health Research Journal.
