Prof. Heinrich Bohlmann is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Pretoria (UP) where he specialises in the development and application of dynamic computable general equilibrium (CGE) models for practical policy research. He has also been contracted as an economic modelling consultant on various research and training projects to clients such as the United Nations Development Programme, World Bank Group, South Africa’s National Treasury, Gauteng Provincial Government, and National Agricultural Marketing Council. His academic and contract work has mainly focused on macroeconomic planning, sectoral impact analysis, energy and environmental policy, and labour market topics. Prof. Bohlmann holds a PhD in Economics from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia.
In addition to his research activities, Prof. Bohlmann teaches and coordinates undergraduate macroeconomics, and postgraduate and professional CGE modelling courses at the University of Pretoria. Previously, he has also lectured undergraduate microeconomics and development economics courses at the University of Pretoria, microeconomics at Fordham University, and assisted with microeconomics and sports economics courses at Monash University.
During his academic career, Prof. Bohlmann has presented papers at several local and international conferences, published research in renowned academic journals and served as a panel discussant at various workshops. He further supervises PhD students and postgraduate research essays, serves as a referee to numerous journals and acts as an external examiner for economics courses at other South African universities. In 2015, Prof. Bohlmann was awarded the inaugural Ken Pearson Scholarship Prize by the Centre of Policy Studies and Center for Global Trade Analysis in recognition of his contribution to the use and development of analytical software for CGE modelling.
Adding to his broader academic community engagement, Prof. Bohlmann is currently a member of and serving on the Council of the Economic Society of South Africa (ESSA). He was previously elected President of ESSA for the 2021-2023 term. Prof. Bohlmann was also previously appointed as Research Director for the Macro-Micro Modeling Group at the Partnership for Economic Policy (PEP) from 2021-2026 where he continuous to serve as an active Resource Person on projects.
