Women's access to secure well-paid jobs is limited, particularly in low-income countries (Arora et al., 2023). Extensive research on the factors influencing female labour force participation (FLFP) consistently shows that education, lower birth rates, and economic growth have contributed to increases in FLFP in industrialised countries. Klasen (2019) argues that multiple factors together explain female labour force participation in developing countries. Trends in FLFP in developing countries have been quite heterogeneous, rising in Latin America stagnating in other regions and even falling in South Asia and the MENA region (Klasen, 2019). As Klasen notes these uneven trends result from the interplay of initial conditions, economic structure, structural change and gender norms and values.
