Co-Impact- Synthesis Paper Exploring the Impact of Social, Cultural, and Legal Contexts on Women's ‎Access to Quality Paid Employment

Abstract

Women's access to secure well-paid jobs is limited, particularly in low-income countries (Arora et al., ‎‎2023). Extensive research on the factors influencing female labour force participation (FLFP) consistently ‎shows that education, lower birth rates, and economic growth have contributed to increases in FLFP in ‎industrialised countries. Klasen (2019) argues that multiple factors together explain female labour force ‎participation in developing countries. Trends in FLFP in developing countries have been quite ‎heterogeneous, rising in Latin America stagnating in other regions and even falling in South Asia and ‎the MENA region (Klasen, 2019). As Klasen notes these uneven trends result from the interplay of initial ‎conditions, economic structure, structural change and gender norms and values.
