We exploit the random assignment of underprivileged college students to a community engagement program. Those assigned to the program received training on leadership, teamwork, and financial literacy; and led information/ training sessions on financial inclusion in their communities. Treated female students improved their academic performance in the short and long term, measured in GPA and credits completed. These effects persist even in the Covid19 pandemic. They also improved their attitudes related to social responsibility and community engagement. Community service programs that expose underprivileged female college students to leadership positions can boost their academic performance and social commitment.
