PIERI-20653 Evaluating the impact of a support hotline for cashew producers in Guinea-Bissau

Abstract

With this project we propose introducing a hotline to support cashew nuts producers in Guinea-Bissau. The introduction of the nkalo MIS has proven the potential of quality information to improve farmers’ market performance in this context, increasing the average revenue of treated producers in our previous PEP projects by 21%. The proposed hotline will take the informational support to cashew producers one step further, by giving them the possibility of discussing their doubts regarding the marketing of their cashew nuts with well-trained analysts. These analysts will provide treated producers with live information on the cashew market and tailored advice adapted to their conditions, location and needs. This direct communication will help producers to better interpret the information, improving crucial decisions such as the optimal time -and price- to sell, or finding a buyer at the right time. We will also use this hotline to contribute to the participation of women in the cashew market, introducing tailored advice for those activities complementary to the sale of whole cashew-nuts in which they tend to specialize.
